About Me

I’m the father of three pretty amazing kids, and I’m married to their mom, my best friend whom I’ve known since third grade.

I’m a missionary kid, having been raised just under the Iron Curtain, through which my parents smuggled Bibles into the former Soviet Union. I’ve been to 50 countries (so far) and have an insatiable thirst for new places and experiences.

I worked as a journalist at newspapers in Oregon, Montana and Ukraine, a television station in Anchorage, Alaska and a public radio station in Chicago, Illinois over the course of a ten-year journalism career.

Today, I’m a conservation communicator with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, where I do digital storytelling and host the Beaver State Podcast. My passion is finding new ways to connect people to our natural resources, to our fish and wildlife, to those critters they may never see but which need them to care about them.

Specialties and interests: Social media, podcasting, data journalism, blogging, video production, digital photography, smartphone multimedia, mobile journalism, digital strategy, digital audience behavior. Craft beer, Russian literature, fishing, hunting, bird dogs.
